      By having effective study skills you could also decrease your anxiety about tests / exams and become a successful student.

    • Activity time:

      1. Watch the video on how to effectively take notes during class or during your studies.
      2. In your next GNS class choose one of the methods mentioned in the videos to take notes.
      3. The following day explain and compare your study notes with a peer to determine any gaps in your notes, or whether you should try a different method.

    • Watch the following videos on how to effectively prepare and complete assessments such as tests and exams.

    • Activity time: 
      1. Take a topic from your GNS module and create a test for your peer with 5 - 10 questions from the topic (e.g. Nursing care in special situations - specific ADL needs). Make the test count out of 15 marks.
      2. Re-read through the information in your prescribed textbook and other resources provided by your educator for the topic. Make study notes if you have not done so already. 
      3. Test your knowledge with a test set by your peer the following day - use a timer while you attempt the test. (20 minutes for 15 marks)
      4. Discuss feedback with your peers in the provided forum of this topic on how you felt after completing this activity and whether you found it useful.

      Watch the following video on how to improve your writing skills for assignments, tests and exams. 

    • Descriptive writing File

      When one has effective writing skills this enables you to express your thoughts and ideas clearly and concisely. It also allows readers to determine your insight and understanding. Having good writing skills includes the ability to write descriptively. 

      Activity time:

      1. Please carefully read through the instructions below before clicking on the image link and starting this activity. 
      2. This activity may be done with a peer or individually. However, it is encouraged to do it with a peer so that you may evaluate each other and share feedback afterwards. 
      3. Collect a piece of writing paper, a pen and a cellphone / electronic device with a timer.
      4. Put a timer on your cellphone / electronic device and view the image provided for exactly one (1) minute.
      5. Hide the image from yourself / cover it and write down what you saw.
      6. Reflect on whether you provided enough details. 
      7. If you only wrote 1 - 5 sentences, then view the image a second time (again only 1 minute) and write more details of what you notice this time. 
      8. Reflect on whether you provided more descriptive detail the second time when you were more focused and purposefully observed for more details. 
      9. If you are completing this activity with a peer, evaluate your peers' description of the image and give constructive feedback.

  • Critical and creative thinking

    • Watch the following videos on how to improve your critical and creative thinking skills, as well characteristics of critical thinkers. 

    • Activity time: 

      As nursing students, you may oftentimes perform activities that are instructed or delegated to you in the unit. While your knowledge and competency develops, it is important to understand the "why" of these activities - this requires critical thinking. 

      1. Read the following scenario and reflect on the questions that follow: "Nurse Ann informs you that the patient, Mrs. Jones who is bed bound and incontinent, requires two hourly turns to prevent pressure sores from developing. She also instructs you to rub the areas of her body at risk for pressure sores every two hours when you perform pressure part care."
      2. Once you have reflected and answered these questions, discuss your findings with a senior nursing student (2nd or 3rd year) or your study group.


      Questions:

        • Why should pressure part care be done two hourly? 
        • Is the instruction to turn the patient two-hourly appropriate for the patient? Explain what guided / assisted you in answering this question. 
        • How do you know whether what you are doing is appropriate for the patient?
        • Why should you rub the pressure part areas every two hours? - is this correct?
        • If this is correct - why? If this is incorrect - why?
