Descriptive writing
When one has effective writing skills this enables you to express your thoughts and ideas clearly and concisely. It also allows readers to determine your insight and understanding. Having good writing skills includes the ability to write descriptively.
Activity time:
- Please carefully read through the instructions below before clicking on the image link and starting this activity.
- This activity may be done with a peer or individually. However, it is encouraged to do it with a peer so that you may evaluate each other and share feedback afterwards.
- Collect a piece of writing paper, a pen and a cellphone / electronic device with a timer.
- Put a timer on your cellphone / electronic device and view the image provided for exactly one (1) minute.
- Hide the image from yourself / cover it and write down what you saw.
- Reflect on whether you provided enough details.
- If you only wrote 1 - 5 sentences, then view the image a second time (again only 1 minute) and write more details of what you notice this time.
- Reflect on whether you provided more descriptive detail the second time when you were more focused and purposefully observed for more details.
- If you are completing this activity with a peer, evaluate your peers' description of the image and give constructive feedback.
