SLO 1.2 Spirituality
This article gives a broad overview of African religious views and practices. There are so many different ethnic groups and it is very difficult to know the details of each religion practiced within these groups.
Remember that for the purpose of your APS module on spirituality, the focus always remains on the holistic care of the patient. We need to allow for spiritual care during illness but also consider how they see the illness and how religious practices may influence the patients’ health. Therefore, a short summary of the most prevalent religions in your area, might help you to understand the patient better. Include the following topics:
- Broad overview of what is the believe
- The moral conduct of the believe system
- Holidays and festivals (practices during festivals)
- Dietary practices
- Rituals and ceremonies (practices e.g. female circumcision)
- Controversial aspects of the religion
Complete the table provided. Keep it very short to assist you with only the basics on each religion. It may provide you with only enough information to start a conversation. Remember that if you address your patient with respect, enquiring about what is important to them and showing that you have their best interest at heart, they will almost always respond positively.
SLO 1.3 Sexuality
In order to have a better understand of all the factors influencing sexual development, take the time to read through this article. It is well explained and a very good summary of the different factors that need to be considered.
Watch the YouTube video on Freud's theory on psychosexual development. It will assist you in understanding the theory.
Sexual health, human rights, and the law significantly influence nursing care by shaping practices that ensure patient dignity, privacy, and access to equitable care. Nurses must respect patients' rights to autonomy and confidentiality while navigating legal frameworks that address consent, discrimination, and access to sexual health services. By understanding these intersections, nurses can advocate for inclusive, nonjudgmental care that upholds patients' rights and promotes their overall well-being.
Read only the index of this document: “Sexual health, human rights and the law”. It will add insight to the complex challenges nurse might encounter in the daily nursing care of patients.
SLO 2.2 Communication
Dear Student,
Welcome to the D1 APS module. Please watch the two videos below and complete the quiz that follows.
The first video explains how the communication process works, highlighting key components such as the sender, receiver, message, and feedback. The second video focuses on communication within multidisciplinary healthcare teams, emphasising the impact of poor communication on patient care.
As you watch, take note of common communication barriers, their effects on teamwork and patient outcomes, and strategies to improve communication within healthcare settings.
Dear Student,
In preparation for class watch and reflect on the videos below and take notes on the challenges observed.
SLO 2.3 Cultural Sensitive Nursing
As a post-class activity, read the article and make a short summary to be used as part of the content to be studied for tests and exam.
