I am aware that as nurses we should strive to be more empathetic, kind and compassionate with our patients, especially those who are dealing with grief and loss. Our role is to be there for our patients every step of the way. My question is, how can we as nurses effectively care for our end-of-life patients as well as the patient's family after receiving such a diagnosis.

We as nurses can ensure that the patient is comfortable, pain free and treated with dignity. We could offer emotional, spiritual and psychological support, respect cultural and personal wishes and maintain clear communication. To support the family, we could offer reassurance, explain the dying process, listen to their concerns, encourage presence at the bedside and connect with them with grief and counselling services.
