Loss is when you lose something you value. There are different types of loss: actual loss, perceived loss, anticipatory loss, situational loss, developmental loss, loss of aspects of self (mental or physical ability), loss of a loved one, etc.

Grief is the emotional response to loss. The effects of grief can harm a person's well-being if not resolved. Many factors influence the normal grieving process.

Death marks the end of a person's life. As nurses, we ensure patients have a peaceful death by providing care before they pass. When a patient dies, feelings of sadness and failure may arise , acknowledging the care we provided can be meaningful. By providing compassionate support, nurses play an important role in helping patients' families process loss and grief .
