Grief is the total response to the emotional experience related to loss.

Grief is manifested in thoughts, feelings and behaviors associated with overwhelming distress or sorrow.

Kubler Ross's grieving stages

1. Denial: the initial reaction to news, characterized by shock, numbness and disbelief.

2. Anger: feeling angry, resentful, and frustrated about the situation.

3. Bargaining: seeks to bargain to avoid loss.

4. Depression: experiencing intense emotional pain, sadness, and hopelessness.

5. Acceptance: gradually coming to terms with the reality of the situation.

Grief is a unique and individual experience and there is no right way or sequence to grieve.
