Loss is not always physical loss but may be perceived loss, anticipatory loss, situational loss, etc. Loss is not always perceived the same and people have different ways of dealing with it. Grief is the response to losing something, much like loss there are different types of grieving, people have different ways of processing grief and I think that it something people should remember when offering condolences that one might not be consoled the same way you are. Death is part of life and patients and family might not know how to deal with it and it is the responsibility of the nurse to educate them and provide comfort to the patient. Nurses may feel the need to grief themselves and that is okay, they have additional resources to reach out to for assistance. For us as student nurses it might still be difficult but in that case lead out to the senior nurses for assistance, the Unit Manager or your CTS
