I was reminded that loss is more than just death; it may also refer to the loss of freedom, health, or a position in life. I found the phases of mourning (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance) to be especially useful in learning how various people grieve in their own time and way. It made me think about how vital it is for nurses to provide emotional support, not just medical care, during these difficult moments. One lesson I got was the importance of active listening. Simply being there with someone who is grieving might be more consoling than attempting to "fix" their sorrow. I also understood how important it is to understand cultural differences in how people experience and express grief.
